Ovens care guide
Oven maintenance: uneven heating, cleaning and common oven problems
A good oven is all about steady, even heat. When baking starts coming out pale on one side and burnt on the other, or preheating takes longer than it used to, the cause is often simple: a worn door seal, a dirty cavity, or an element that is no longer working at full strength.

Understanding your oven
Most home ovens heat using elements at the top and bottom of the cavity. Convection (fan) ovens add a fan, often with its own element, to circulate hot air for more even results. A thermostat switches the elements on and off to hold the temperature you set.
Built-in ovens are fitted into kitchen cabinetry and need the right cut-out, ventilation and power connection. Free-standing and counter-top ovens are simpler to place but follow the same care principles.
Common uses and benefits
- Baking, roasting and grilling in one appliance
- Fan modes for more even results across multiple racks
- Keeping food warm without drying it out
- Built-in models free up counter space
Features and things to consider
- Ventilation: built-in ovens need the airflow gaps shown in the installation guide.
- Power supply: larger ovens need a socket and wiring suited to their load.
- Door seal: a good gasket keeps heat in; a damaged one wastes energy and causes uneven cooking.
- Rack position: the middle rack usually gives the most even results unless a recipe says otherwise.
Common oven problems
- Oven not heating or heating slowly
- Possible element, thermostat or control fault; a technician should check.
- Uneven baking
- Door seal leaks, fan not working, overcrowded racks or a weak element.
- Smoke when heating
- Old spills burning off on the cavity floor or elements.
- Door not closing properly
- Bent hinges or a dislodged seal.
Cleaning and care tips
- Let the oven cool fully and switch it off at the socket before cleaning.
- Remove racks and trays and soak them in warm soapy water.
- Wipe the cavity with a paste of baking soda and water, leave it on for a while, then wipe off with a damp cloth.
- Clean the door glass with a non-abrasive cleaner; avoid scraping it with metal tools.
- Check that the door gasket is clean and seated properly all the way around.
- Use a tray or liner under dishes that may bubble over, so spills do not bake onto the floor of the oven.
When to call a professional
- The oven does not reach temperature or one element stays dark
- The fan does not turn in convection mode
- The door glass is cracked
- The oven trips the power or you notice a burning electrical smell
- You are fitting a new built-in oven into cabinetry
